The IVF Timeline:
What to Expect
In Vitro Fertilization is a remarkable science requiring precision and patience. Here is a definitive, step-by-step breakdown of your 4-6 week journey.
Preparation & Suppression
Depending on your protocol, you may take birth control pills or other medications to regulate your cycle and suppress natural ovulation.
Ovarian Stimulation
Daily hormone injections begin to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. You will have frequent ultrasounds and blood tests.
The Trigger Shot & Retrieval
A 'trigger shot' matures the eggs. 36 hours later, a minor surgical procedure retrieves the eggs under light anesthesia.
Fertilization
The retrieved eggs are combined with sperm in the lab. In many cases, ICSI is used to inject a single sperm directly into an egg.
Embryo Development
Embryos are monitored in the lab for 3 to 5 days as they grow to the cleavage or blastocyst stage.
Embryo Transfer
One or more healthy embryos are non-surgically transferred into the uterus using a thin catheter.
The Two-Week Wait
After transfer, you wait about 10-14 days before taking a beta-hCG blood test to confirm pregnancy.
The Emotional Timeline
Beyond the physical steps, IVF is emotionally demanding especially during the "Two-Week Wait". Kafal Care provides access to counseling and continuous coordinator support to help you manage the psychological highs and lows.

Timeline Questions
How long does the entire IVF process take?
A typical IVF cycle takes about 4 to 6 weeks from the start of ovarian stimulation to the pregnancy test. The exact timeline depends on your body's response.
Do I need to take off work during the IVF timeline?
Most patients continue working throughout the process. You may need a day off for the egg retrieval and the embryo transfer procedures, as well as short visits for morning monitoring (blood tests and ultrasounds).
When are frozen embryos transferred in the timeline?
If opting for a frozen embryo transfer (FET), the transfer usually occurs in the next menstrual cycle, adding about 3-4 weeks to the overall timeline but often yielding optimal results.
How many clinic visits are required?
During the 10-12 days of stimulation, you will need frequent monitoring (around 4-6 brief visits) to check follicle growth and adjust medications.
